Advances in technology have allowed us to make consistent improvements over the years. Poly and composite tanks have lightened the load, allowing the same size truck to carry more water. The availability of smaller, higher capacity pumps has increased the tanker's firefighting capability without adding significantly to the length of the unit. One reason is that they are more maneuverable on back roads and around swampy fill sites than a full-size pumper. Another is that a mini pumper allows for a quick initial response in departments where understaffing is a problem, and a qualified driver may not be immediately available for the usual first-out unit. And then, of course, there's price. While a mini pumper's limited capabilities make it no replacement for a traditional pumper, its significantly lower price tag makes it a great piece of supplemental apparatus in many fleets.
